Beauty is fleeting.

"Mom, the bird lady looks kinda like a man." said my girl.  She was watching her beloved Mary Poppins.  That beautiful scene where Mary Poppins sings Feed the Birds.  It is one of my favorite moments of the movie.  She was simply stating the obvious, really.  The woman is depicted to be quite haggish.  We paused the movie.  This was a teachable moment.  Yes, my girl, beauty fades.  The bible speaks of this.  We open daddy's bible to read,
Charm is deceptive, and beauty is fleeting; but a woman who fears the Lord is to be praised. {Proverbs 31:30}

  Fleeting.  Beauty is fleeting.  What matters is your heart.  Is it bursting with love, and joy, and peace, and kindness, and above all else a holy fear?  Or is it temporal?  Where gray hairs and wrinkles and jiggles will level you.  Will you be unshakable or will the gravity of the world -- both physically and spiritually-- crush you?
It was something worth pausing over.  I want so badly to get this into my girls.  You're beautiful.  You're gorgeous.  But from the inside out.  Beauty will flee, will sprint, will run run run as fast it can from you, but your heart.  That is what matters.  Your spirit.  A spirit that fears the Lord.  That is what will be praised.
I am grateful, today, that a simple pause helped my girls... helped me, to see and be reminded that this big wide world is fleeting.  And these moments with my girls are, too.  It is okay, in fact, it is more than okay to pause and to ponder and to explain in a million different ways what exactly fleeting means.  Our kids are worth it, amen and amen.
