Thrift Shop Challenge.

Thursday, January 31, 2013

So last Friday I was reading through my blogroll and came across Young House Love's Macklemore Thrift Shop Challenge.  Sweet, I was all about it.  I casually mentioned it to Kerry and Ona over Saturday morning muffins and they were totally in.  To sum up the Thrift Shop Challenge ... it is based on the Macklemore & Ryan Lewis song Thrift Shop.  You can check out the squeaky (ahem) clean version here.

THRIFT SHOP (PG Radio Edit Clean version) - MACKLEMORE & RYAN LEWIS FEAT. WANZ from Garrett Wesley Gibbons on Vimeo.

Anyways, YHL proposed a challenge to a)take $20 to spend at the thrift store as the song suggests b)see what sweet things you can purchase with that $20 and c)get your scavanger hunt on and find something they rap about in the song and take a silly/weird photo with it.

We checked out a Salvation Army "down the road..." and took our obligatory $20 photo.
Then we got to hunting and found and scored a random assortment of things.
If you couldn't tell from the pictures, we snagged a little cranberry inspired glass, a white pedestal bowl, a reproduction Folies Bergere print, a brown skinny tie, a Ford V8 wood model kit, and an uber random assortment of Easter madness.  I tried to convince Kerry that Ona wanted this odd doggie print, but she wasn't too sure herself.  Alas, it stayed on the shelf for the next beret + doggie loving person.
Last on our list was to find some Thrift Shop references, yo.  Okay, I am waay too non-ghetto to pull that off, but let's pretend I'm gansta for one hot second.  I mean, I looked pretty dope, "draped in a leopard mink..."
And I was rolling with this hott man who was rockin' a "dookie brown leather jacket that (he) found diggin'..."

And my baby girl?  Well, she be "digging, I'm digging, I'm searching right through that luggage..." and came up with this leopard print hand purse.
She was obsessed.  #glamorgirl

Our spoils totaled just over $7 and can be spotted around the house.  I filled the cranberry glass with budget blooms and coupled it with the reproduction print for a little kitchen spruce up.
I love how they play off of the backsplash, kinda like they were meant to be.  The white pedestal bowl was pretty n-to the-asty, so after a good scrub down, I filled it with Valentine conversation hearts.
That bowl is only about half full now thanks to a few thirty-eight-weeks-pregnant-girl-treats, thank you very much.  Just keeping it real, yo.  Nope, still can't pull it off.  Ha.  These cute eggs will come in handy in a month or so when Easter decorating comes around.
The red and pink shiny ones are actually plastic and come apart.  Wouldn't they be cute in the girls' Easter baskets?  And I can't decide if I think that bunny is funny/cute or funny/scary.  Oh, and one more bit of ridiculousness found in the Easter madness was this.
I have no words, except that I love that it has its own stand and that the handpainted cheeks are lower than the lips.  And that this ugly egg woman now lives in our living room corner book case.  We all need a bit of inexplicable hilarity in our lives right?

Well, there you have it.  Our version of the (Completely Unofficial) Macklemore Thrift Shop Challenge.  Randomness that involves my two three favorite people doing outrageous things in the name of fun and this fun in a thrift shop = a dream come true.

  1. I love it! Wondering if I can convince either Joe or my brother to go with me and do the same. Joe is currently obsessed with Macklemore, so maybe he'll be up for the adventure!

  2. Many of the clothes are donated from rich locals who can afford to buy high-end clothes straight from the designers, then grow easily bored with them.
