Ona loves her play veggies, but she actually likes real fruits and vegetables too.  We have been reading the book Baby Led Weaning (more info here).  The basic premise of Baby Led Weaning is once your baby hits the six month mark and can sit up by themselves and reach out for food, they are ready for supplemental food apart from milk.  The theory behind Baby Led Weaning is that a baby watches his/her parents and learns from emulating what they do.  Why shouldn't they learn how to eat from us as well?  Basically, it eliminates the need for any sort of baby food, pureed food, etc., as the baby eats what the parents are eating.  It is supposed to encourage family meals, as one parent isn't required to feed the baby, so everyone enjoys eating together.  Plus, it eliminates the need to spend time preparing different food for your baby.  Of course, you might not put the extra jalapenos on their tacos, but only minor changes are said to be needed.  To be honest, we weren't/aren't sure how Ona will totally take it.  However, the theory sounds like less work and more fun for us and her, so we're going to try it.  Well, we sort of started this week!  Ona isn't quite six months old yet, but we had been noticing that she was reaching out for our food during dinner.  So, we busted out her new highchair ::thanks Grandpa & Grandma:: and have been giving her fruits and vegetables to try.  As of this week Ona has tried bananas, apples, celery, carrots, pea pods, and a little bit of cheese.  She spends most of her time playing with the food, picking it up and dropping it all the while feeling all of the different textures.  It has been amazing to see how much her coordination and focus has improved even over the course of five or six meals.  Ona can now look at something and reach her hand and pick it up and take it directly to her mouth.  She seems to like apples the best. She hasn't really "eaten" anything yet, but sure loves to suck on things.  Her faces in response to the different flavors crack us up.  So, we will keep you up-to-date on how the whole process goes, but for now it seems like it is going to be a hit.   Have we mentioned that this girl is getting waaaay too big!

  1. Norah's favorite is apples too. I like the theory of BLW and we do give her food from her plate (well or I give her a "bite" of my apple as she frantically lunges for it) but I'm so terrified of choking that I'm too scared to do full on BLWing - so props to you for being stronger than me haha. She is so stinking adorable!

  3. Jacklynn, if you are interested, the book discusses some pretty fascinating facts about how babies bodies are made to avoid choking. It is really interesting and may give you more of a confidence. ;) We love seeing Norah's pictures pop up, so cute! Becky, that's awesome. Yes, we would love to get together soon!!
